Blogging

Last Post in this domain!

Yes, you read it correct!

This is the last post in this domain.

Two years ago I registered this domain and it is going to expire on March 13, 2010.

I am migrating to a new domain HeatFlows.info, the site is up and running.

The new site is being built using Wordpress, not Drupal.

Further, the site is hosted freely by Academicsweb.in. That means I will be paying only for the domain name, not for hosting.

Note to the subscribers: The feeds will remain the same, as I am using feed burner!

Now I am a "Buzzer"

As I have started using Google Buzz, can I address myself as a "Buzzer"!

This is how my site looks...

... until Drupal 7 is released!

This website started with the default theme for Drupal (Garland). The crude look of the site called for this comment from Abi.

When I switched over to Tapestry, the site looked neat, but it was taking too long for loading! There was no way I could blog / update my site with the dial up connection I have. The size of theme itself is 700 kB, when other themes are of the order of 30-40 kB.

For next few weeks, my site ran on Newswire, until a student of mine left a message on my gtalk: "your site looks like a news paper, especially like The New York Times! Was it a complement or ...?

I started searching for a neat-looking 4-column (free) theme for Drupal, and tried with sand tiger and amity island. You can see that both themes promise "two or three sidebars". However, after installation, I found that both are 3-column themes (not 4-column as they promise, they can not offer three side bars). Perhaps, I should never have considered these two themes, after looking at the names of the themes! May be these kind of names promise so much but deliver less!

After searching more, I was surprised to find that only one more 4-column theme was available, channel nine, apart from Newswire and Tapestry. But, as you can see, the channel nine is header-less! The widgets can be placed only in four columns, and nowhere else.

After considering all these, finally I settled for Litejazz (the present theme of this site), which is a 3-column theme. I had to spend about 5 hours to hack and convert 3-columns into a 4-column theme! Obviously for placing more adsense ads!

Moved to a new host

This website has moved to a new web host (at least for one more year). The right side bar shows an affiliate link to my new web host. This choice was made by me after an extensive research. I am going with Silver Plan.

However, my domain registrar continues to be my previous web host (from March 10, 2008 to March 10, 2009, I hosted this site with hosting.india.to).

P.S.: This post is just to share my experience with the readers of this blog.

Blogging tips: Use eye-catching post titles

You may be an auto enthusiast, and you may would like to blog about the Geneva Auto Show. If you write a post with a title "Geneva auto show" or something like that, who would visit your blog?

So, to attract more visitors, I suggest you to use an eye-catching title, something like this!

P.S.: After visiting the link, do not ask me how did I find it!

This site may be down for a couple of days

Well, this site is moving to some other web host.

I have been blogging since 2006. My earlier blog, as well as the present web site, both are 'full' of Google ads as you can notice.Yet, I am unable to make up for my yearly domain registration and web hosting cost. In fact, I am yet to receive my first cheque from Google!

I have given up my hope of becoming a millionaire using adsense. Instead, I have chosen to move to a cheaper web host!

So, the site may be down until it propagates (may be for a couple of days).

New look for Profess Or It Heats!

Finally, I have succumbed to the public demand! There were at least two people who were asking me to change the theme (template) of my website. Well, I finally settled for Tapestry. As a custom theme module is not yet availabe for Drupal 6 (as the download page says), I had to do a bit of hacking! Feel free to comment on the new looks!

Grand Unified Blog in a New Avatar!

At last, the Grand Unified Blog is ready in its final avatar (or is it semi-final?). After experimenting with quite a few CMS (like Wordpress, TikiWiki, e107, Joomla! to name a few), I finally settled for Drupal. In the process, I have learnt to install / configure / use-a-little-bit tens of CMS on a server! The decision to go with Drupal and the preceding learning process have taken a couple of months!
With Drupal, one can build not only blogs, but also websites, discussion fora, wikis, link directories, and what not. You name the type of website, Drupal is here for the task. Most important advantage is that the site administrator need not intall / learn-to-use / maintain / update / upgrade multiple software for each type of website. Of course there exists a steep learning curve for Drupal, but the time spent is worth it. Especially for a net-savy person like me.

Well, here we go, with this new avatar!
